Holland & Sherry

Faithful MollyLoot readers know that I like embroidery a lot, especially when it is sewn on a sumptuous array of fine fabrics like camel hair, cashmere, cotton, horsehair, linen, silk, suede, velvet and wool.  So you can imagine my joy at discovering that the goods produced by the venerable British fabric house, Holland & Sherry, are now being carried at Harbinger (as so many good lines are…).  I was wowed anew by the exquisite hand of all of their ground fabrics and thrilled by the range of embroidery designs.  I am currently obsessed with leading edges on curtains so when I saw these shots, I just about plotzed:

The Omega Collection

Well, the magnificent Christopher Farr has won my heart again. He has just produced a dynamite new line of wool and mohair rugs based on a selection of sketches done by Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and other key members of the Omega Workshops and Bloomsbury collective from 1912-1919. They feel incredibly fresh and current to me:

M&K Fabrics

I have long been a fan of Michaelian & Kohlberg’s beautiful handknotted carpets so was pleasantly surprised to discover that they also have a line of fabrics, M&K Textiles. All designs are printed on a 65/35 linen-cotton fabric and include both hand block-printed and silk-screened patterns. The scale ranges from quite small to quite large repeats, allowing you to mix and match with abandon. Check out some of my faves below:

deKor

This weekend I found myself with a little time to kill in the funky Eastside enclave of Echo Park. As I was wandering along Sunset, I happened upon deKor, the latest addition to the hood. This home furnishings shop opened in July and carries a groovy mix of Scandinavian and American vintage treasures (the owner, Isabelle Dahlin, is Swedish). Everything feels like it has an interesting past – like it has been loved some place where grounded, intelligent, creative people have lived.

Earthy and Ethnic

My perusal of what’s on offer from the major retailers continues and I am noticing an earthy trend on the rise. As a fan of the seventies in all its incarnations, I dig it! It seems that everywhere I look, I am seeing large, chunky baskets and organic shapes and finishes. I love the variety of shapes, natural fiber and the multiple storage needs these can fill:

Fornasetti!

As I was trolling through 1stDibs this morning for a screen for a client, I came across these gems by one of my favorite designers, Piero Fornasetti:

Ti amo! For those of you who are not familiar with the man, Fornasetti worked in Milan from 1935 until his death in 1988 and created a look and style all his own, using a range of materials and decoupage to create his tongue-in-cheek, trompe l’oeil masterpieces. Read the rest of this post »

Tuesday Morning Mailbag

Just one question for the mailbag today so here goes:

Kristin writes:

Hi Molly,

I am having trouble deciding on a rug for my dining room. I am looking for a
rug that will work with the somewhat open floor plan I have, the rug in the
living room is only a few feet away, but also works with the curtains that I
worked so hard to make. I am thinking grey, but have not been able to find
anything that works.

The dining room is painted Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore and the curtain fabric is
Dahlia in the Slate colorway from Calico Corners. The dining room is open to the
living room and the kitchen.

Tuesday Morning Mailbag

You know what time it is! Let’s just jump in…

Am looking for some round rugs, preferably 5 ft to 6 ft in diameter- maybe a sisal. any suggestions?

ML: I love round rugs in the right spot but they can be tricky to find. Never fear, I have tracked down some good options and hopefully one of these will work for you. Anthropologie is working out the round rug at the moment (and all come in the 5×5 diameter you are looking for). For starters, there is this Doily Rug (I particularly like it in the gray but in the interest of full disclosure, I should say it comes in brown, too)

Tuesday Morning Mailbag

Hi guys. It’s that time again where I try to solve your design dilemmas. This week readers had some good questions so let’s get started!

Kristen writes:

Hi Molly. I hope you get a chance to weigh in on this rug conundrum. I need help. I’d like to replace this falling-apart little Ikea Persian with something else. I’m thinking zebra pattern? Or something else mod? And it needs to be larger than this 5 x 8, doesn’t it? My only hesitation is that there’s a large Persian in the adjoining dining room, and I’m afraid that something really graphic will be too much of a contrast. What do you think?

Best,
Kristen
