March Madness

My apologies to the out-of-town readers and the dudes who thought this might be a post on the scintillating annual college hoops tournament. Sadly for you, this is a post about art and design stuff I want to see in LA in March. There’s so much good stuff on view, it’s just mad. Get it?

Roy Lichtenstein: In Progress at the Frederick R. Wiesman Museum of Art on the campus of Pepperdine University. This exhibition shows the pop art king’s process from initial sketches to drawings, collages and finished work. I am definitely going this weekend.

Surface Truths: Abstract Painting in the Sixties at the Norton Simon Museum. Starts March 25. There is an excellent explanation of the moment and the intent of the show on their website (above). The curators break it down for you much better than I can so for now, I’m just going to give you two elegant paintings to drool over (top - Red Vermillion, Jack Youngerman, 1961, bottom - Ida Rose, 1962).
