Open Your Doors of Perception

Hey peeps. First of all, don’t worry. Today’s post isn’t a request for you to drop some acid and go deep into your psyche. My request is really much more mundane. I’m asking you to tune in to one of the most necessary functional elements of your home – the humble door. Often overlooked, doors can provide an incredible range of design opportunities. We open and close them all day long but rarely pause to notice what they look like. Once you take a second look, you realize that they can be the workaday, dingy afterthought to a room or they can change the tone of the entire space. And how delicious is this soft palette of grey, cream and white?

Or this dazzling combination of cream, sage green and gold? The gold bumps up the glamour quotient significantly…

Or you could paint something decorative in the interior space created by the molding. This elegant door is from the Palazzo Pucci in Florence. Molto chic!

Hi Molly. I hope you get a chance to weigh in on this rug conundrum. I need help. I’d like to replace this falling-apart little Ikea Persian with something else. I’m thinking zebra pattern? Or something else mod? And it needs to be larger than this 5 x 8, doesn’t it? My only hesitation is that there’s a large Persian in the adjoining dining room, and I’m afraid that something really graphic will be too much of a contrast. What do you think?

Best,
Kristen
