Unique LA

Last night, a friend asked, with some despair (and more than a little demand) in her voice, “Are you giving up on your blog?  When are we going to get some new posts?”  Dear readers, my apologies for leaving you in the lurch!  I have been busy, rather busy, with client work and it has left me with precious little time to refelect and share design tidbits.  I want to be able to do it all, I really do.  And I am going to do my damnedest to deliver!

To wit, today I want to turn you on to a very cool event happening in LA this weekend called Unique LA.   Sonja Rasula (a woman who really can do it all) started this annual independent design and gift show in 2008 and has grown it into the largest show of its kind in the country.  The event showcases local vendors (90% are California based) with the crafty talents of folks from Brooklyn to Portland thrown in for good measure.  Think one big giant Etsy sale, in person.  Top it off with DIY workshops (for those of you who want to get your crafty on) and a selection of LA’s best food trucks.  Yeah, baby!

I checked out their online catalog and thought I’d whet your whistle with a few goodies that caught my eye…

Etsy, Part Deux

Ok folks.  I’m not sure what to say.  I sat down, ready and eager to make more exciting discoveries on Etsy and share, share, share!  However, apart from a few finds, I came up empty.  Maybe I’m tired.  Maybe the bad photography and high percentage of kitsch wore me down.  Maybe the best stuff on Etsy is the art.  Maybe I’m doing it wrong.  Have I lost my touch?  Oh dear…  Please let me know what I have missed (and I am sure there is plenty).  In the meantime, enjoy the goodies I was able to tease out from amidst the crocheted tea cozies and stained glass suncatchers.

First up, this hilariously direct  Let’s Make Outpillow from Alexandra Ferguson:

And I found these fly bargello needlepoint pillows from  Lisolabella.  God, I love bargello!

I was talking to a friend today and Etsy came up.  It got me thinking that I hadn’t really trolled through their groovy and diverse offerings in a while so I thought this week, we’d check them out together.  For those of you who don’t know, Etsy is an online marketplace whose motto is “Buy, Sell and Live Handmade”.  What that translates into for you is a wonderful opportunity to buy some beautiful, handmade items directly from the artist or artisan.  It takes some patience to wade through the myriad pages of goods but I have found it is well worth it. Today, let’s focus on some art, shall we?

Nothing I am showing you is above $250.  Most of these pieces are $75 and under and most are small.  Imagine a wall hung with all of them!  I am…

There is photography:

Spring, 8×12,  Strawberry Skies Art
